Gansu–Qinghai Grand Loop: One of the Most Beautiful Road Trips in China

If you are looking for one of the most unforgettable travel routes in China, the Gansu–Qinghai Grand Loop should be high on your list.

This incredible journey covers around 2,700 kilometers and takes you through more than 20 top attractions across Qinghai and Gansu. The best part is that it is a true loop route, which means there is no backtracking. Every day brings a new landscape, a new culture, and a new experience.

The journey usually begins in Lanzhou, the capital city of Gansu Province. Lanzhou is special because it is the only provincial capital in China where the Yellow River runs directly through the city. From here, the route heads west into the heart of Northwest China.

After leaving Lanzhou, travelers pass through Menyuan and continue toward Qilian. This area forms a natural boundary between the Hexi Corridor and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. With an average elevation of around 4,000 meters, the scenery here feels wide, open, and powerful. Along the way, grasslands stretch into the distance, and herds of cattle and sheep can often be seen grazing under the big blue sky.

The next major stop is Zhangye, home to the famous Zhangye Danxia National Geopark. Known as the “Earth’s Color Palette,” this area is famous for its colorful rainbow-like mountains. At sunset, the layers of red, orange, yellow, and purple become even more dramatic, making it one of the best photography spots on the route.

From Zhangye, the journey continues to Jiayuguan, an important historical site along the ancient Silk Road. Sitting at the foot of the Qilian Mountains, Jiayuguan looks strong, rugged, and majestic. It once served as a major western gateway of the Great Wall and remains one of the most symbolic landmarks in Northwest China.

Following the Hexi Corridor westward, the route eventually reaches Dunhuang, one of the most famous destinations on the Silk Road. Here, travelers can visit Mingsha Mountain, Crescent Spring, and the world-renowned Mogao Caves. The Mogao Caves are considered a treasure house of Buddhist art, while Crescent Spring is a beautiful natural wonder in the desert. Watching the sunset over the sand dunes at Mingsha Mountain is an experience that many travelers never forget.

After leaving Dunhuang, the road crosses the Dangjin Mountain Pass and reaches the popular Aksai Oil Town. The landscape here feels almost like the surface of the moon, giving the journey a lonely but cinematic atmosphere.

The route then continues across the vast Gobi Desert toward Wusute Water Yadan Geological Park. This rare landscape combines water and Yardang landforms, creating a mysterious and otherworldly view. It is one of the most unique natural sights along the entire journey.

Driving along National Highway 315, travelers arrive at the famous Emerald Lake. Under the sunlight, the lake shows different shades of green, blue, and turquoise, looking like pieces of emerald scattered across the earth. It is one of those places where almost every photo looks like a postcard.

The final part of the journey passes through Chaka Salt Lake and Qinghai Lake. Chaka Salt Lake is known for its mirror-like reflections, while Qinghai Lake offers peaceful blue water surrounded by mountains and open grasslands. When the sky, lake, and land meet, the view feels almost unreal.

Before returning, the route also crosses Xiangpi Mountain, where blue rivers, golden rapeseed flowers, and rolling landscapes create a beautiful ending to the trip.

The Gansu–Qinghai Grand Loop is more than just a road trip. It is a journey through deserts, mountains, grasslands, lakes, ancient history, and Silk Road culture. For travelers who love nature, photography, history, and adventure, this is truly one of the best routes in China.
